My Bloody Valentine: 3-D isn't the most sophisticated horror film ever. In fact, it's about as generic as they come. The film takes place in a small ironically named community where everyone is white, stupid, and drunk. A terrible tragedy occurs that kills everyone involved except for the mentally unstable psychopath, and most of the residents have a bad habit of being impaled with a pick axe while doing something completely idiotic. Do films this inane even deserve a synopsis?

The selling point this time around is given away in the title: the film is captured in 3-D. There's been a lot of speculation and buzz in recent weeks surrounding the revival of 3-D films, including revelations that companies like DreamWorks and people like James Cameron are intending to only work in 3-D from now on. Bearing this in mind, I went into MBV:3D searching for a tech demo instead of an actual movie.

3-D is created through cameras that capture the scene using two side-by-side lenses spaced about an eyeball's width apart in order to mimic the way human eyes work. With the goofy glasses on, the image comes into focus giving the image on screen depth. With the glasses off, the picture is blurry and fuzzy. It's a neat trick to be sure, but that's all it really is. Depending on where you're sitting, the 3-D becomes incredibly painful after a while. Viewing angles play a big role in the experience, so it's best to sit in the middle instead of off to the side (which is where I normally sit).

The 3-D creates an appreciable depth, that is to say you can judge distance between objects in the background relative to the foreground, etc. The best uses of the gimmick are when Mr. Gas Mask hurls his pickaxe or when glass breaks and shatters. Actually, there is this one neat moment where an idle hand with blood dripping from the fingertips came into my corner of the screen, and it was convincing enough for me to think that my nachos got a nice crimson dressing. So really 3-D enhances the startling power of quick cuts (no pun intended), but that's all it's good for. You might flinch at the occasional bit of debris or metal spike, but don't expect to be able to grope a pair of bosoms.

The film outside the gimmicky 3-D is decidedly sub-par. The acting is terrible, the dialogue is predictable, and the score is your standard out of tune shrieks. The story on the other hand is actually somewhat inspired even if it is destroyed by the director's own ineptitude. The ending is a bit of a twist, but it's more of a "well the whole movie was pretty pointless then, wasn't it?" instead of the desired "golly that sure was great!" variety.

- Filming in 3-D normally adds an additional 10-15 million dollars to the production budget.
- A ticket for a 3-D film will costs a few dollars more than a normal ticket.
- 3-D films are worthless to pirates since they're virtually impossible to endure without those stupid glasses.
- I don't think this is my best review either.

American Idol comes to kansas city

Hell hath no fury like an "American Idol" rejectee; at least, that's what Mia seemed to feel when she was dissed by the judges on last night's Kansas City (Mo.) auditions: Fury!

She actually said that God would bring down retribution on Simon, Kara, Paula and Randy for not passing her through. Wow.

Other "losers" took their bad news only slightly better. Michael Nicewonder cried, especially since his loss meant his mother, who had told him he didn't have a good voice, was proved right by the judges.

Then there was Chelsea, a pretty girl who had the right look and the wrong - painfully wrong - sound. "You sound like a cat jumping off the Empire State Building would sound right before she hit the pavement," Simon said, in his bon mot of the night.

One disappointed singer actually took it quite well: Asia, the strapping sister of tiny India, was rejoicing because her more talented sister made it through, even though she didn't.

Overall, I thought that Kansas City smoked Phoenix in every way, delivering far better singers and some really fascinating back stories, too. Michael Castro, Jason's younger brother, just had begun singing three weeks before his audition and he nailed it, winning a golden ticket.

Ashley did what Bikini Girl should have; that is, picked a song written by Simon and sung it well! Her rendition of "Footprints in the Sand" by Leona Lewis (Simon is a co-writer) was good, but what was great was her savvy, flatter-the-judges choice. Smart girl, Ashley.

Matt the Welder (and family man) is one to watch--his blue collar vibe and super strong vocals hooked the judges and me, too.

I'm sure we'll be seeing the two music teachers later on, even past Hollywood. Danny, the young widower who had lost his wife only four weeks before his audition, knocked it out of the park. He's already being called a front runner. When he dedicated his golden ticket to his wife, I cried. I bet millions of people did the same thing.

I also believe that some real talent will be unearthed in Kansas City. Kara DioGuardi seemed to fit right in with the other three judges on her debut last night, and I was mildly impressed. I've opted to move to my home desk for tonight's episode. Last night, I worked the couch. I think we'll all be better off tonight as a result.

It's David Cook's home turf. As always, there are a lot of people who showed up to audition. We get it - you can stop putting everyone in an auditorium. No need to flex your muscle, FOX. People in the crowd love Simon Cowell. And Seacrest. Jason Castro is here today to support his brother, who will be trying out.

Chelsea Marquardt, an attractive blonde girl with confidence issues ("Can I buy you a drink, Chelsea?"), is the first audition. Oh, this is actually a surprise. She's really, really terrible. She sings "Without You" by Harry Nilson. It's the same song that the girl in the bathtub killed herself to in "The Rules of Attraction." Simon and Randy are absolutely brutal and mean. Simon said it sounded like the sound a cat makes as it plummets from the top of a skyscraper. Quite accurate.

Before I get started with the coverage of tonight's American Idol, how about a little Wednesday-evening quarterbacking on last night's show?

The big buzz today seemed to be all about Ryan Seacrest trying to high-five blind contestant Scott Macintyre. Honestly, I didn't think it was the worst moment ever -- he wasn't like, "Dude, you're leaving me hanging here." He wanted to offer Scott his congratulations and high-five was his natural reaction, and he told him what was going on. I mean, it was a little awkward, but I wasn't on the bandwagon of watching the clip again and again. *shrug*

Overall, I felt like last night, the producers tried to give us a kinder and gentler Idol, but it was also, uh, boringer. (Before the grammar police come out of the woodwork, I know that's not a word. It's a joke.) There wasn't as much straight-up humiliation, and only a couple of kooky characters. It kind of felt like they were giving us this "updated" Idol approach, at least in the first episode, but then the previews for tonight made it look like it would be business as usual.

Well, I'll stop speculating on that -- let's watch and see for ourselves.

Tonight's auditions are from American Idol champ David Cook's hometown of Kansas City.

Randomly, season seven finalist Jason Castro is there and greets Paula Abdul, telling her his brother is getting ready to try out. Intriguing!

First up is Chelsea Marquardt, who "has been singing as long as I can remember," which isn't the first time we've heard that sentiment on this show. She says she usually surprises people because this "powerful voice" comes out of this "little girl" and that she sings "with so much emotion and power, people are like, 'Whoa!'" The judges look like they are thinking "Whoa!" but not in a good way. Simon Cowell: "It sounded like a cat jumping off the Empire State Building and the sound it would make before it hit the floor." Randy Jackson says then it sounded like the siren that would come next. Paula yells at them for being mean, but rather convolutedly. Kara DioGuardia says she is not a good singer, "sweetie." (She really needs to lay off the "sweetie.") It's a no.

Ashley Anderson sings "Footprints in the Sand," a Leona Lewis song co-writted by Simon. Obviously she is going for brownie points, but then she sings "footsteps" instead of "footprints," and they stop her and call her out on it. But she's a good singer (Kara says she has got some "chops"), and she gets four yes votes.

Hey, look, it's a commercial for Idol during Idol. But all the David Cook fans will be happy!

Casey Carlson sings Vanessa Carlton's "A Thousand Miles," and she is pleasant enough. Her occupation is listed as bubble tea maker, which makes me giggle. It sounds so official. Simon: "I like you a lot. ... You have a good vibe about you." Everyone says yes, so on to Hollywood.

Brian Hettler says he isn't bringing any gimmicks, just his voice. He says he was trying to become an opera singer, but he left singing for two years. He never says he actually ever got into a school. He sings (I guess) Aretha Franklin's "Think," but it's just weird. Randy calls it "different." Simon says he hated everything. Randy asks if people really compare him to Josh Groban, and he insists on singing some more, and while it's loud, it's not what one would call good. He's out. The cameras follow him, and he says, "If you're expecting me to cry, don't even bother."

Cue the montage of crying, and in one case, screaming-totally-for-the-cameras overreaction. Yawn.

After a break, Ryan talks to David Cook's parents, who happen to be walking down the street. (Uh-huh.) Ryan talks about his signature last season of doing original twists on well-known songs, which leads to a montage of people doing original, but not in a good way, takes.

He reports that they first had sex on February 7, 2006 on the couch at her home when her husband slept upstairs. McCallum has been married for five years, and her husband was at her side in court.

The Feb. 7 incident was the beginning of a long affair, where the boy states they had sex approximately every other day for a total of about 300 times. McCallum reportedly ended the affair in November 2007 when she became jealous that he was using the cell phone she had given him to text other girls. They had sex for the last time, and they tearfully exchanged I love yous, according to reports.

McCallum sent the boy 10 love letters, in which she told him she would choose him over her job. In a MySpace message, she reportedly admitted that she was unable to control herself around him.McCallum, who was called “obsessed” by prosecutors, was released after being charged on the seven counts of statutory rape. Marcus Schrenker, was, or is, an Indiana businessman whose financial management companies, heritage wealth management indianapolis Inc., Heritage Insurance Services Inc. and Icon Wealth Management, were under investigation. Now it appears he apparently bailed out of his small plane and let it crash in what may have been an attempt to fake his own death.

Now why would Schrenker do this? Well, reports are that he has been sued for $1.4 million:

In court papers filed in December in federal court in Indianapolis, collection agent Creative Marketing International claims that Marcus Schrenker, acting as an insurance broker, failed to remit commission reimbursements of $1.4 million to National Western Life.

That’s just part of it. Also, according to AP:

On Friday, two days before the crash, a federal judge in Maryland issued a $533,500 judgment against heritage wealth management indianapolis Inc., and in favor of OM Financial Life Insurance Co. Death of Travolta's son raises medical questions

Millions of children and adults have seizures in the United States, but dying from one is rare. That only adds to the confusion and mystery surrounding the life and death of Jett Travolta, the 16-year-old son of actors John Travolta and Kelly Preston.

The death certificate lists a seizure as the cause of death, according to an undertaker in the Bahamas, where the boy died Friday. Family representatives and lawyers declined requests Tuesday for more information, fueling speculation that has swirled for years about the boy's health.

A Travolta attorney said the teen had a history of seizures, and John Travolta has said his son was successfully treated when he was 2 for a rare disease called Kawasaki syndrome, which can lead to heart disease and related problems.

Medical specialists who did not treat the boy told The Associated Press on Tuesday that while Kawasaki syndrome is poorly understood, it's extremely unlikely the disease had anything to do with the teen's death.

Gossip magazines and blogs long have suggested the boy also had autism — a claim John Travolta denied. Autism is frequently accompanied by seizures that experts believe may stem from the same brain abnormalities that cause the developmental disorder.

Dr. Michael Kohrman, a University of Chicago pediatric neurologist, said up to one-third of children with autism have some sort of seizure disorder.

Still, there are dozens of other causes of seizures. Recurrent seizures are sometimes called epilepsy and are caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain. These affect more than 3 million Americans.

Mild seizures can be barely noticeable; severe ones can cause convulsing and loss of consciousness.

"Sudden death in epilepsy is not an unheard-of phenomenon," said Dr. Bruce Cohen, a staff neurologist at the Cleveland Clinic.

It can happen with seizures lasting more than 15 or 20 minutes, typically when medicine stops working or if patients quit taking medicine, Cohen said. One way death occurs in these cases is respiratory muscles weaken from prolonged convulsions and the patient stops breathing, he explained.

More rarely, he said, about one in 1,000 epileptics die each year from a condition doctors call "sudep," or a sudden unexplained death that typically occurs with no sign of a seizure. Whether this happened to Jett Travolta or whether autopsy officials in the Bahamas know that term is uncertain.

"We're dealing with a massive lack of information," Cohen said.

Michael Ossi, an attorney for the Travoltas, and Samantha Mast, a Travolta publicist, told the AP by e-mail that they would not discuss details of the boy's illness.

San Diego Restaurant Week celebrates fifth year

The fifth annual San Diego Restaurant Week kicks off Jan. 11, giving San Diegans a chance to sample a fixed-price, three course meal at more than 150 area restaurants. The six-day event, which concludes Jan. 16, has earned the city the unofficial title of Restaurant Week Central for the southwestern U.S.

"I've been trying to put together an event for San Diego for over a dozen years," said event organizer Ingrid Croce, owner of Croce's Restaurant & Jazz Bar in the Gaslamp Quarter. "It was our hope … to be able to bring our city up to the level of recognition as a dining destination."

Having just returned from Hawaii where Croce shared her expertise with island restaurateurs, she said San Diego's success is culling interest from other U.S. and European cities hoping to develop similar culinary experiences.

While local patrons are encouraged to take advantage of Restaurant Week offerings, part of the event's purpose is to attract visitors.

"We try to build (Restaurant Week) around a time when it isn't too busy within the city," Croce said. "We try to encourage people to come and stay at hotels and make a week of it."

Last year more than 250,000 dinners were served during Restaurant Week. Croce expects that number to climb this year, especially when diners learn the fixed-price menus have been expanded to include a $20 option.

"It couldn't have come at a better time," Croce said, referencing the money crunch many are feeling. "Even in this economy, when people are questioning if they should go out or not, they should treat themselves to Restaurant Week. It's a week-long chance for diners to experience what San Diego has to offer."

Restaurants are encouraged to create a three-course meal from dishes already on the menu at a price point that reflects about a 20 percent discount.

Given the fact that the number of participating restaurants has doubled since year one, this strategy seems to be working for both proprietors and diners.

"We're able to really do something that is indicative of what's on our menu," said Wade Hageman, executive chef at Blanca in Solana Beach. "It's important to do something that we would serve in our restaurant at any given time. You're really exposing your product to a lot of people."

The $40 menu at Blanca will include something old and new: Merlot braised short ribs and "popcorn" shrimp (three jumbo prawns dusted in popped popcorn powder).

"We want to promote the restaurant, not just pack people in because it's Restaurant Week," Hageman said.

"The best thing is that it brings in people who wouldn't normally come to our restaurant," said Angela Neri, assistant general manager of Delicias in Rancho Santa Fe.

In addition to world-class cuisine by executive chef Michael Knowles, such as the maple glazed pork belly and trio of heirloom beets, first-time visitors to Delicias will have an opportunity to sample the eatery's award-winning ambiance.

Neri suggested calling ahead to get a table near the courtyard fireplace, one of the most popular locations in the restaurant.

The last episode of Jon and Kate Plus 8 saw the show pass 3 million viewers total, cementing it once again as one of the top watched shows on cable, and by far the most successful one that has graced TLC. Those ratings points are easily turned into dollar signs by people at the network, and it is easy to see that if you take a show that is garnering a large audience, and add a little extra flair for drama to the promotion of the show, you are going to end up with more people tuning in to see what might, or might not, happen on upcoming episodes more..

Yesterday afternoon I was at a baby shower (for triplets) and this got us talking about the TV show Jon and Kate plus 8. It was odd because everyone had very intense feelings about this family. Maybe it is because all were Moms or because the shows had certainly taken a turn for the worse, but most of guest started as loyal viewers and have either stopped watching completely or only watch sporadically. This brought us to why, which brought us to Kate which brought us to this –

Twelve Moms that were fans of the show offer ten New Year’s resolutions for Kate of Jon and Kate plus 8. We know she is busy so we made the list for her:

10. I will give to others without the camera rolling and being a spokesperson so my children will actually have a reason to follow that example.

9. I will quit complaining about my so called “tight budget” and crying poor while being paid to make a TV show, get free clothing, take lavish trips and are move into a multimillion dollar home!.

8. I will let my children get dirty and have cupcakes on their birthdays even if they don’t eat their dinner so they won’t remember me as a control freak, killjoy and grow up into ones themselves.

7. I will take Mady in for counseling or therapy before her behavior escalates. I will have take time with her alone and really LISTEN to her and try to help her see she is loved and not just a side show of the Jon and Kate plus 8 shows. I will make sure she gets any (and all) the professional help she needs NOW and for good measure I will take Cara in for a session as she may just be handling things inward.

6. I will quit begging for (and then taking) money (love offerings) from hard working people on church tours. These are hard working people who actually work to make a living and are giving from their heart because they BELIEVE you need the money, which you obviously, but they do!

5. I will love my children equally. I will not tell my boys they are gross or icky or Mady is like Jon because she is a screamer? I will be more aware of what I say to my children and understand that my words can sting for a lifetime.

4. I will turn my focus on love and family and not money. I will remember that my kids see and hear everything I do and make my choices accordingly. I choose to bring them into this world and I will treat them with love as I care and protect them on a daily basis.

3. I will stop showing my children in the shower and on the potty. I will wise up and understand how inappropriate it is to having a crew not only filming these scenes when I am in the room, but even more so when it is just the kids, the crew and camera as well as showing them on TV as entertainment. I will remember I am the parent, stop these tapings and start protecting my children from inappropriate exploitation.

2. I will stop belittling Jon. I will stop screaming at Jon. I will stop insulting Jon. I will stop insulting Jon him behind his back, to the camera, in front of the kids and to his face. I will try and remember I love Jon and choose to be with him for more reasons than the show is called Jon and Kate plus 8!
1. I will stop making a living on the backs of my children because I really do love them and understand what this is teaching them. They are NOT a circus act; their privacy should not be sold off to the highest bidder.

Another unconventional choice from President-Elect Obama, as Howard Kurtz reports that CNN's Sanjay Gupta appears on the road to be tapped as surgeon general:

President-elect Barack Obama has offered the job of surgeon general to Dr. Sanjay Gupta, the neurosurgeon and correspondent for CNN and CBS, according to two sources with knowledge of the situation.

Gupta has told administration officials that he wants the job, and the final vetting process is under way. He has asked for a few days to figure out the financial and logistical details of moving his family from Atlanta to Washington but is expected to accept the offer.

According to Kurtz, Gupta and Obama met to discuss the position in November. Gupta also spoke with Obama's HHS Secretary designee Tom Daschle.

During the 1990s, according to Kurtz, Gupta was a White House fellow who helped craft Hillary Clinton's speeches and policy recommendations.

Gupta had a two-hour meeting with Obama in Chicago in November, the Post said, and later met former Sen. Tom Daschle, who has been tapped to lead the administration's efforts to reform health care as Health and Human Services Secretary.

Obama told Gupta he could be the highest-profile surgeon general in history and would have an expanded role in giving healthcare policy advice, the Post said.

Gupta served in the 1990s as a White House fellow, where he was a special adviser to Hillary Clinton, writing speeches and helping her formulate policies.

ok finally let me stat my tutorial about Pizza Dough From Scratch.Even though yeast breads get made in our home quite frequently thanks to Brett, this is the first one that I've actually done. I've been wanting to make pizza dough for a while now. Pizza is most definitely my favorite food, but when I eat it, I always feel so guilty and unhealthy. I felt like making my own pizza, with my own toppings, would quell some of those guilty feeling. Brett was not sold on the idea because he thinks that Boboli crusts are just fine and that making dough is too time consuming. But I say if you've got the time, at least try it!

Making the dough went well. I did ask Brett for his expert advice a couple of times. I kept adding flour beyond what the recipe called for because it was not forming a "firm dough." I don't think it ever did, rather I just gave up and said, "Firm enough!" This was not a rising dough recipe, so I just let it rest for 10 minutes and then rolled it out.
I love my rolling mat and tool! No measuring necessary!

The trickiest part was transferring the rolled out dough to the cookie sheet (we used to have a really nice pizza pan but we have no idea where it went.) I was able to pick it up despite it sticking just a little to the mat, and after suppressing the strong urge to toss it in the air, I got it onto the silpat in more or less the same shape. It baked by itself for a little while and then it was time for the toppings.

I got so excited about the toppings that I forgot to put the cheese on first! It doesn't really matter as far as taste goes...I think. We put thinly slice red onion (thank you mandoline,) pineapple, turkey pepperoni, and for those of you eagle eyes, yes the last of our bacon is on there too. (The bacon was the best part!)

We didn't use the best quality of mozzarella for pizza (part skim low moisture) so it melted funny. But it tasted fine and I'm sure its more healthy than usual pizza mozzarella.
The crust was a little bit crunchy for me, but Brett gladly ate mine. I prefer soft crust like a breadstick. Maybe next time I will cook it slightly less. I think it was better than Boboli and less expensive too if you don't mind spending some extra time making it. Most importantly, I satisfied my need for pizza and said goodbye to pizza guilt!

Barack Obama has finally settled on the last major appointment he had left to make, that of CIA director. Given that the Bush administration has done so much long-term, institutional damage to our intelligence superstructure, basic tenets of human rights and the rule of law, and the really nearly impossible to overstate damage done to the very idea of America itself, and almost all of that has fallen under the scope of the CIA at one point or another, bloggers like Glenn Greenwald, Andrew Sullivan, and other leading voices in the fight for not buying into the false choice of security over freedom, have been keeping a very close, very wary eye on what Obama was going to do here.

Remember that Obama’s first floated choice for CIA Director , John Brennan, had to withdraw his name from consideration due to a mostly blogosphere-induced backlash against his previous advocacy of Bush positions on wiretapping, torture, and the like. While it remains unclear how complicit Brennan actually was in any of that (probably not very, in truth), those of us hoping for a clear indication of new direction were happy to see him go.

But that left Obama in a difficult bind. For CIA director , you kind of need somebody who has been working at a high level in the intelligence community. But, given that that would have been under Bush’s tenure, leon panetta that also would be someone who almost certainly, on some level, had a hand in the aforementioned abuses.

As Andrew Sullivan notes, Panetta is clearly “significantly, detached from the torture regime and its apparatus in a way that anyone involved in the CIA in the last eight years would not be.” And as Glenn Greenwald adds, “it does seem clear that the Obama team was serious about avoiding anyone who had any connection at all to the Bush torture, surveillance and detention programs.”

For another, Panetta does have some thoughts on the germane issues of the post. Atrios uncovers a March op-ed by Panetta (and here’s a related one in the Washington Monthly) in which he more or less unequivocally condemns torture, wiretapping, and in general using fear as a justification for legality. It’s a thin record, to be sure, but at least it’s in the right direction.

And finally, what I think is thus far being missed, is the decision to choose not a spook, but a manager for the post. Panetta’s history is that of a human resources guy, a liason problem-solver. To that end, the smartest early take I’ve read yet on his appointment comes from Marc Ambinder. Panetta is there to clean house and, like much of what Obama does, to provide competent, pragmatic, and not-particular-ideologically driven leadership. In other words, like Obama himself, the hope seems to be that

anyone watched the rose bowl and saw the G commercial tonight ?? , it was for Gatorade. Gatorade the company is re branding and it looks as though they are succeeding. The G commercial, featuring lil wayne, is on top og Google Hot Trends tonight.
